Stellantis to Delay Electric Ram Pickup for Plug-In EREV Model

Stellantis, a leading automaker, announced a significant delay in the release of its all-electric Ram pickup, pushing the launch from 2025 to 2026. This decision stems from challenges with EV adoption and the struggle for competitors to turn a profit from electric trucks. The delay will allow the company to prioritize the launch of an electric range-extended version of the truck known as the Ramcharger, featuring a gas engine combined with EV technologies.

Consumer Interest and Competitive Advantage

According to Stellantis, overwhelming consumer interest and the desire to maintain a competitive edge in technology have influenced the decision to prioritize the Ramcharger over the full battery-electric model. The company aims to address the slowing industry demand for half-ton BEV pickups while meeting consumer expectations and staying ahead of the competition.

Launch Timeline and Leadership Changes

The Ramcharger is set to be available for customer orders in the first half of 2025, with the full launch of the Ram 1500 REV scheduled for 2026. This shift in priorities marks the first significant change announced since Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis returned to the company earlier this month, following a management shake-up that saw Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares depart.

Ram Brand Challenges and Future Outlook

Kuniskis, CEO of Dodge Brand, Stellantis, acknowledged the challenges faced by the Ram brand, including slower-than-expected sales of the redesigned Ram 1500 model and delays in heavy-duty truck releases. He emphasized the importance of the Ramcharger pickup, describing it as the brand’s “Goldilocks truck” due to its ideal mix of power, range, and capabilities.

The Ramcharger’s unique design as an “extended-range electric vehicle” (EREV) allows it to operate as a zero-emissions EV until its battery is depleted, at which point an electric onboard generator powered by a 27-gallon, 3.6-liter V6 engine takes over. Stellantis estimates the Ramcharger’s range to be up to 690 miles, with up to 145 miles powered solely by the battery and an additional 130 miles provided by the electric generator.

As Stellantis navigates the evolving landscape of electric vehicles, the decision to delay the all-electric Ram pickup in favor of the Ramcharger reflects the company’s commitment to meeting consumer demands and staying competitive in the market.
