Confessions of a TV Junkie
Look, I gotta admit something. It’s 11:30pm on a Tuesday, and I’m knee-deep in Season 3 of some Netflix show I barely remember starting. I’m not proud of it. But frankly, who am I kidding? We all do it. Binge-watching is the new smoking, except instead of lung cancer, you get… well, probably lung cancer from not leaving your couch.
I’m Marcus, by the way. Well, not really. Let’s call me Marcus for the sake of this article. I’ve been a senior editor at BusinessTV.net for, uh, alot longer than I care to admit. I’ve seen trends come and go, but nothing has gripped our collective attention like the endless scroll of streaming services.
And don’t even get me started on the guilt. I mean, I know I should be doing something productive. But then I think, “Just one more episode.” And then another. And another. It’s a slippery slope, folks.
But Why, Though?
So last Tuesday, I was having coffee at the place on 5th with my friend Dave. Dave’s a psychologist, or at least he plays one on TV. I asked him, “Why are we like this? Why can’t we just watch one episode and be done with it?”
He looked at me like I was an idiot. Which, fair enough. “Marcus,” he said, “it’s the dopamine hit. Your brain is like, ‘Oh hey, that was fun, let’s do it again.’ And before you know it, you’ve watched 18 hours of content in 36 hours.”
Which… yeah. Fair enough. But still. There’s gotta be a way to enjoy TV without turning into a couch potato, right?
Speaking of habits, have you checked out healthy habits daily routine tips? No? Me neither. But maybe we should. Maybe that’s the key. Balance. Moderation. Blah blah blah.
The Great TV Debate
I brought up this whole binge-watching thing at a conference in Austin a few months back. There were alot of raised eyebrows. One guy, let’s call him Greg, said, “I don’t have time to binge-watch. I’ve got a job, a family, responsibilities.”
And I get that. But here’s the thing, Greg. We make time for what’s important to us. And for alot of us, that’s TV. It’s escapism. It’s entertainment. It’s our way of unwinding after a long day.
But is it healthy? Probably not. Is it something we should feel guilty about? I don’t know. Maybe. Maybe not. I’m not sure but… it’s just… yeah.
A Tangent: The Rise of the Anti-Hero
You know what else is kinda messed up? The rise of the anti-hero in TV shows. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love a good bad guy. But it’s like, every show has to have one now. And they’re not even that bad. They’re just… flawed. Like us. Which, honestly, is kinda refreshing. But also kinda depressing.
I remember watching this show with my sister, let’s call her Lisa. We were both like, “Why are we rooting for this guy? He’s a terrible person!” And she said, “I don’t know, but I can’t stop watching.” And that’s the power of TV, folks. It makes us care about people we wouldn’t give the time of day in real life.
So What’s the Verdict?
I don’t know, man. I’m not here to tell you how to live your life. But maybe, just maybe, we should all try to be a little more aware of our TV habits. Maybe set some limits. Maybe take a break every now and then. Maybe go outside. I dunno. It’s all just committment, right?
But hey, at the end of the day, TV is supposed to be fun. It’s supposed to be entertaining. It’s supposed to make us forget about our problems for a while. So maybe we should just embrace it. Maybe we should just say, “You know what? I’m gonna watch 10 hours of TV today, and I’m not gonna feel guilty about it.”
Or maybe not. I don’t know. It’s all a bit confusing, honestly.
